Many patients ask us: “How should I sit in my office chair?” or “What is the perfect office chair to prevent low back pain?”. Here are a few tips when choosing the right office chair or wanting to adjust your current one to prevent low back pain.
- Seat Height – You need to make sure that your feet touch the floor. Adjust the seat height in order to have both feet flat on the floor. Your thighs should be parallel to the ground.
- Seat Depth – Push your hips forward in the chair. There should be about 2.5 inches of space behind your knees. This will make sure that there won’t be too much stress at the seat edge and help prevent low back pain.
- Lumbar Support – Your low back should push against the back of the chair. Place a cushion or pillow to encourage the low back to arch slightly and prevent you from slouching forward.
- Armrest – Adjust them high enough so that your shoulders are relaxed.
